Greyhound or whippet, I don't know, but this this artful dog on the wide end of a banister was one of the beautifully-carved animals that caught my attention inside the Natural History Museum in London. Here is another carving from one of the banisters.

I'm no dog expert, Sheryl, but the proportions don't look quite right to me for a greyhound... but nonetheless, it is a nice find.
Stylised hounds do not always have the absolute scale or correct proportions as they are artistic and decorative reps of the animal. Especially if given a heraldic touch.
Also, many years ago, there were small greyhounds and a variety of sizes which are now crossed in separate classes. E.g., a whippet was a small greyhound often owned by ladies as more of a lap dog/pet, as were minuature or Italian greyhounds. Now these are different breeds within the sight hound class and the larger greyhounds are mainly bred for racing or show, rather than coursing or pet.
